My Mom & Halloween
I've always loved Halloween and fall, I loved the weather and the way the air smelled. The leaves on the trees were changing beautiful colors, and apple orchards were open for picking. Carving pumpkins was cold on the fingers but fun to cut designs, and people's yards were decorated…the ones who went all out obviously being the best!
What I loved more than anything though was getting to dress up and put together a costume…and I loved that my mom put so much effort in for me and my siblings. Some years we got store bought costumes, but most of my favorites were homemade, or at least partially DIYed. I loved fashion as a kid, and loved that my mom was constantly making things for around the house to decorate, for gifts, or altering our clothes. That probably fueled my love for design more…getting to see her put so much love and effort into everything, and just getting to be creative and be shown so many different ways to be artsy. Music, art, and creativity were her strong suits, besides just bringing so much life and passion into everything she did.
I honestly think my brothers costumes she made each year were better than mine, but I still loved that she went through all the work and effort each year to help, or let's be honest make the whole thing. I'm sad that she won't be here this year, or the following years, to help out or offer tips, but I'm so thankful that she put this love and passion for design and art into me from a young age…I would be a completely different person without it.
